Thoughts: The 512 has been one of the mainstays of EoTech for a number of years. Simple reason is, it works. The 512 enables the shooter to maintain a total field of vision with both eyes open, and have a solid holographic sight in the field of view and maintain situational awareness. While primarily designed to run on AA batteries, if lithium variants are used it will extend the device’s run time. And although the 512 does have a on/off mechanism with 20 different brightness levels, the automatic 8-hour shut off ensures that even if the shooter forgets to turn it off the batteries will still be conserved. When mounting the 512 to any picatinny rail, the proper placement for the EoTech is as far forward and over the center of the rifle as possible. This ensures the sight doesn’t over-dominate the shooters total field of view while providing maximum sight picture.

Pros: Great sighting device and bright reticule. With its simplicity and toughness, there is little on the market that can beat the EoTec 512 as a holographic sight device. The device comes with two AA batteries out of the box, as well as the required allen wrench for adjustments to picatinny rail mounting as well as an optional screw-mount for more traditional means.

Cons: Although somewhat clunky, the 512 has had a number of predecessors that have sequentially gotten smaller and only improved the technology. Despite its age, the 512 is the original and still a solid performer. There may be some problems when mounting the 512 to an AR with a pica tinny upper receiver and hand guard because of the AA battery compartment covering the slip-ring.

In the end, the EoTec 512 is a great sight device and for moderate/near distances this holographic device is among the top of the gear pile. Its durability and bright reticule makes this the perfect sight device for avid target or sport shooters.
